01. BARYNYA PERFORMANCE (about 20 min) - Barynya presented songs, dances and music of Russia.
02. Grade 5 - "KALINKA" - ("Êàëèíêà" - “Guelder-Rose Tree”) - most famous Russian folk song and dance.
..."Juniper, juniper, juniper, my juniper,
In the garden there's the berry, my raspberry.
Under the pine, under the green pine,
Lay me down to sleep
Oh you dear pine, oh you green pine,
Don't you rustle so loud over me
Beautiful maid, dear maid,
Please fall in love with me!"...
04. Grade 3 and Grade 4 - "METELITSA" ("Ìåòåëèöà" - “The Snowstorm”)
traditional Siberian Russian song and dance. "...Snowstorm is blowing along the street, My sweetheart is walking there, Please stop, do not walk, dear!, Let me look at you, my joy!...
05. - Grade 1 and Grade 2 - "KOROBUSHKA" - ("Êîðîáóøêà" - “The Peddlers”) - Russian favorite folk song. Lyrics are by the great Russian poet Nekrasov. A countryside peddler has a basket filled with attractive prints and brocades. At first-sight he falls in love with a pleasant girl. He is ready to lay at her feet all his worldly goods for a glance from her dark eyes and a kiss from her ruby-red-lips.
06. Grade Pre-K and Grade K - "SENI" - "Ah Vy, Seni, Moi Seni" - "Ah you, inner porch, my inner porch".
This is a traditional Russian folk song. It tells a simple story about the girl who is in love with young brewer Vanya, but the girl's strict father forbids them to see each other. The tune itself is a simple one, but capable of embellishment, and for that reason, it is often either the second or third tune taught to a beginning balalaika student. It is also often performed by solo female singers. The song was known at least since 18th century.
07. Grade 6 and Grade 7 - COSSACK DANCE "Varen'ka" ("Êàçà÷èé òàíåö" - "Cossack dance") - Don River Cossack songs and dance. Kazaki are better known outside of Russia as Cossacks (Turkish word meaning Outlaw, Adventurer or freebooter/freeman). The Don Cossacks had their own independent republic for most of the 17th century, and in 1835 reached an agreement with the Russian czar, according to which they would provide him with highly trained soldiers in return for land and special privileges. Kazaki (Cossacks) are first mentioned in the 15th century as freedom-loving exserfs, Tatars and descendants of Scythian warriors living on the open plains of southern Ukraine and Russia's Don River basin. Many Hollywood movies depict fearless, captivating warriors, quite lively, dancing with their sabers.
08. Grade 8 - "BARYNYA" - ("Áàðûíÿ") -
original Russian folk dance with short "Chastushki" (four line folk verses). It was the first number in the program that was presented by ensemble back in 1991. The Barynya dance is an alternation of limericks and frenetic dancing. The content is always humoristic. The dancing consists mainly of fancy stomping and traditional Russian squat work. In old times in Russia the word "Barynya" (Landlady) was used by simple folks as a form of addressing to a woman of higher class.

(Russian: Ìèõàèë Âèêòîðîâè÷ Ñìèðíîâ) is an artistic director and founder of ensemble "Barynya" based in New York City, author of many articles about traditional Russian dance, music and instruments in English and Russian. Mikhail received his Master's degree from the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts. As a child, he was a member of the famous "Moscow Boys Chorus" - one of the most prestigious all-male choirs in Russia. Before coming to the United States in 1991, Mikhail was a soloist in a several Russian folk dance
and music groups including the Moscow State Center for Russian song,
"Russkaya Pesnya", under the direction of Nadezhda Babkina. While studying
in Moscow, Mikhail followed his passion for Russian folk culture bytraveling to many different regions of Russia such as Tver, Smolensk, Belgorod, and Don River to collect Russian folklore at its source. He was surprised to find out that folk dances, songs, melodies, lyrics, and tunes change from village to village, even if those as close as a couple of miles
apart. In these folklore expeditions, Misha recorded over 100 hours of Russian folk
music and dances, performances on folk instruments. Later he has
incorporated much of this original material into repertoire of his ensemble
"Barynya" - the biggest (and many believe the best) Russian dance and music
ensemble outside of Mother Russia. Mikhail is adept on a variety of Russian
folk instruments including balalaika-contrabass, balalaika, and gusli.
However, his favorite instrument remains the garmoshka, the small Russian
folk button accordion used in Russian folk music and dancing. In January
2009 Mikhail Smirnov and dancers of ensemble Barynya were featured on
national TV, NBC's "SUPERSTARS OF DANCE" - breathtaking international dance competition led by executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller ("American Idol", "So You Think You Can Dance"). This prestigious dance
competition hosted by Michael Flatley ("Lord of the Dance") and Susie
Castillo, a former Miss USA. Mikhail Smirnov was one of eight judges to decide which country will
win. The show
premiered on NBC network on January 4th and aired through January 26th,
2009.
