В декабре 2019 года мы были завалены работой - бегали по всему Нью-Йорку, Нью-Джерси, Коннектикуту и поздравляли детей с Новым Годом в качестве Деда Мороза и Снегурочки. Всё было очень хорошо, но вдруг я увидел на фейсбуке пару фоток и видео из китайского Юханя. Я стал тревожиться, а вдруг и у нас начнутся такие же дела, станет мало работы для артистов нашего ансамбля Барыня. Я поделилися своими страхами с женой и детьми. Они рассердились и запретили мне смотреть Фейсбук. В тот же день я удалил его со своего смартфона.

Ночью под Рождество мне приснился сон, что почтальон принёс посылку из Китая, я съел то, что там лежало, а как раз вечером на репетицию приехал наш басист Леонид Брук. Он и так уже несколько недель кашлял, но всё равно поймал от меня вирус, а на обратном пути к себе домой заразил им и весь Бруклин. Во сне всё произошло очень быстро. Целый день я терпел, и никому не рассказывал про свой сон, но вечером мы с Линой и новой танцовщицей Катей (Mileuskaya Katsiaryna) несколько часов выступали в ресторане Энивей на Манхэттене. Барменша мне всё время подливала "для голоса", я расслабился и рассказал про свой сон. Жена опять очень рассердилась и сказала, чтобы я больше не читал новости. На следующее же утро я удалил ссылку на Google News с десктопа своего компьютера.

В середине января я решил проверить как зимуют наши пчелы. Улей на дворе был пуст, а внизу улья я нашёл что-то похожее на бациллу короновируса, которую тогда уже всё время показывали в новостях по русскому каналу M24, который мы обычно смотрели во время завтрака. Лина в те дни напряжённо готовилась к концерту с Чарльстонским Симфоническим оркестром, очень рассердилась и стерла на нашем Samsung Smart TV ссылку на русские новости M24.

В начале февраля во время гастролей по флоридским библиотекам нас изрядно покусали клопы в арендованном через AIRBNB доме, свободных номеров в гостиницах не было из-за супербола в Маями. Мы нашли какую-то маленькую гостиницу в даунтауне, откуда было страшно выходить вечером. По пути домой в машине мы слушали через youtube роман «Противостояние» (англ. The Stand) Стивена Кинга о пандемии "супергриппа", убивающей практически всё население земли. Мы очень испугались и решили послушать, что там в новостях с китайской эпидемией, но по всем каналам только говорили про импичмент американского президента, и мы успокоились. 8 февраля на балу "Петрушка-2020" в отеле Плаза (куда нас в своё время привёл играть русский американский певец Гари Нова) было людей даже больше чем обычно. Наш оркестр играл с восьми часов вечера до двух утра. Басист Брук все время кашлял.

В конце февраля после гастролей по школам в Питтсбурге (штат Пенсильвания) обстановка стала понемногу накалятся. На масленице в Русском Посольстве в Вашингтоне у нас и наших танцоров пограничники на контроле спрашивали про кашель и недавние путешествия в Китай. Так как басиста Л.Брука с нами не было, всех пустили без проблем. Андрей Савельев нас очень выручил, сыграл на моей контрабас-балалайке, низкий ему за это поклон, а также всему вашингтонскому оркестру, и лично дирижеру Светлане Никоновой. По неясным пока причинам наш любимый басист отказался выступать на территории РФ, думаю, он, кажется, до сих пор боится, что его призовут в советскую армию.

В начале марта мы полетели на гастроли в Техас. Уже было реально страшно. В городе Сан-Антонио, где у нас проходили все концерты, с базы, где держали эвакуированных из Китая американцев, каким-то образом ушёл зараженный вирусом человек. Зрители на концертах постоянно кашляли и сморкались, но из наших артистов никто не заразился. В Техасе у нас было 12 концертов и на каждом было от 250 до 1000 человек (школьники и учителя). Прямо перед тем как сесть в самолёт в Нью-Йорк мы услышали как по телевизору как какой-то главный доктор хриплым голосом говорил, что маски не нужны, но от других людей нужно держаться подальше. Самолёт из Сан-Антонио был набит битком. Весь полёт я сидел между двумя толстыми людьми и старался не дышать.

В середине марта несмотря на тревожные сообщения концерты и вечеринки продолжались, причем некоторые свадьбы и особенно одна бармицва в Нью-Йорк Сити были просто с огромным количеством гостей. Но власти всё уже начали понемногу закрывать. Самое обидное случилось в самом конце перед карантином, буквально за два дня. У нас было куплено место выступить на конференции в шоколадном HERSHEY, штат Пенсильвания. Мы заплатили за возможность там выступить для студентов почти $4000 долларов. Я очень надеялся, что это мероприятие отменят или перенесут на следующий год, но устроители ничего подобного не сделали. Они провели конференцию с наполовину пустым залом. В поледний момент многие университеты не разрешили своим студентам поехать. Мы очень круто попали на деньги, так как на продали ни одного концерта. Двое наших танцоров заразились и потом несколько недель болели.

Наш последний концерт перед карантином был 15-ого марта в Бруклине в русском ресторане в районе Бэй-Ридже. Гости обнимались и целовались, пили водку и танцевали. Знаменитый журналист с русского канала RTVI, который был в числе пригашенных, восхитился нашим выступлением и позвал нас в свою передачу. Когда мы ехали на съёмки, весь Нью-Йорк уже был совершенно пустой. На Таймс-Сквере в Манхэттене вообще не было людей, полицейский вышел из своей машины с включенными разноцветными огнями и покашливая приказал нам убираться в свой Нью-Джерси. В этот вечер мы решили больше не смотреть по телевизору ABC NIGHTLY NEWS BROADCAST, так как потом уже никто не мог спать без крепких напитков.

Утром на сдедующий день я вспомнил как мои родители рассказывали мне про пограничный конфликт на советско-китайской границе (остров Даманский) в 1969 году. Тогда все люди подумали, что у СССР будет война с Китаем. Моя бабушка Анна Николаевна, которая в то время работала конюхом в деревне под Вышним Волочком, запрягла колхозную лошадь, поехала в магазин и купила мешок сахара, мешок соли и мешок макарон. Я решил, что и нам надо сделать тоже самое на всякий случай. Мы поехали в магазин и накупили целую машину консервов, туалетной бумаги и прочих вещей первой необходимости. Всё это до сих пор лежит в гараже, так как есть консервы оказывается никому не нравится.

16 марта замолчал телефон, а по электронной почте начали приходить письма с отменами всех концертов. В результате мы потеряли всю намеченную работу до сентября месяца. Никаких новых заказов не приходит, только требования вернуть задатки за назначенные концерты. 22-ого марта мы заполнили в интернете формы на пособие по безработице и до сих пор ждём решения. Я начал изо всех сил искать хоть какую-нибудь работу и в результате получил временное место ночного грузчика в большом магазине COSTCO по соседству. Маленькая церковь в нашем городе по субботам раздаёт людям бесплатные продукты.

14 апреля состоялся наш первый виртуальный концерт для 26 школ в Техасе. Как выяснилось, выступать виртуально намного труднее, чем это делать обычным способом в зале со зрителями. В борьбе с электронными средствами связи человек не всегда выходит победителем... Одни только съёмки видео с танцорами и видеозапись выступления заняли почти три дня. Однако более тысячи школьников и учителей посмотрели наше шоу через интернет и даже прислали благодарственные отзывы. В июне и июле у нас назначены ещё несколько виртуальных концертов в библиотеках штат Нью-Йорк и Пенсильвания.

В начале июня наш басист Леонид Брук наконец-то перестал кашлять и эпидемия в наших краях пошла на убыль. Нулевой пациент выздоровел.

BARYNYA. DARK TIME CHRONICLE
I stopped sleeping normally back in December 2019, when I first saw a couple of photos and videos from Wuhan, China on Facebook. I had a scarry thought, what if such videos and photos started to appear in our country too, what work for musicians, singers, balalaika players, and dancers of ensemble Barynya would there be. I shared my fears with my wife and children, but they were not up to it as at that time we were running all over New York and New Jersey congratulating local Russian kids with New Year as Ded Moroz and Snow Maiden "Snegurochka". They got angry and forbade me to watch Facebook. On the same day, I deleted it from my smartphone.

It was the night before Christmas I had a dream that the mailman brought a package from China and I ate what was inside and the same evening our bass player Leonid Bruk came for rehearsal. He had been coughing for years, but he still got a virus from me and on the way home infected all of Brooklyn. It all happened very quickly in a dream. I was patient all day and didn't tell anyone about my dream, but in the evening myself, Lina and a new dancer Mileuskaya Katsiaryna, performed for hours at an Anyway Cafe in Manhattan. The bartender was always giving me more drinks "for voice," so I relaxed and told them about my dream. My wife got really mad and told me not to read the news anymore. The next morning, I deleted a link to Google News from the desktop of my computer.

Around mid-January I decided to check on our bees to see how winter is going for them. The hive in our yard was empty, and below the hive I found something similar to the coronavirus bacillus that was all over the place on the Russian channel news M24, which we used to watch during breakfast. At the time Lina was busy preparing for a concert with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and got angry at me for always talking about the news, damn virus, and erased the link to M24 on our Sansung Smart TV.

In early February while touring the Florida libraries, we were bitten big time by bedbugs in a house rented through AIRBNB, but there were no available hotel rooms because of NFL Super Bowl LIV in Miami, nevertheless we found a small hotel in downtown at which it was scary to go out in the evening. On the long drive home from Florida in our car we were listening to Stephen King's "The Stand" on youtube about a super flu pandemic which was killing almost the entire population of the world. We were very scared and decided to listen what was on the news about the coronavirus epidemic, but all the channels were talking about impeachment of the President, so we calmed down. On February 8th we played for a Petroushka Ball at the Plaza Hotel, there were even more people than usual. Our orchestra played starting 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. Bass Player Leonid Bruk was coughing all the time as usual.

In late February, after touring schools in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the situation began to get a little heated. During Maslenitsa, at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., guards asked our dancers about coughing and any recent travels to China. Since bass player Bruk wasn't with us, they let everyone in without a problem. Musician Andrey Saveliev helped us out a lot as he played my contrabass balalaika, thank you to him, as well as the whole Washington Balalaika Orchestra, and personally to conductor Svetlana Nikonova. For reasons still unclear, our bass player refused to perform on the Russian land (at the Russian Embassy), I think he's still afraid he'll be drafted into the Soviet Army.

In early March, we went on tour to Texas. It was already really scary. In the city of San Antonio where we had all the concerts, there was a base where infected people who traveled from China were held, somehow a man infected with the virus left. The audience at the concerts were coughing the entire time, but none of our performers were infected. In Texas, we had 12 concerts and each had anywhere from 250 to 1000 people (children and teachers). Right before we got on the plane to New York, we heard some chief doctor on TV saying we didn't need masks, but we had to stay away from other people. The plane from San Antonio was packed. The whole flight I sat between two very big people and tried not to breathe. I though to myself that if I was some contrabass balalaika player from Brooklyn I would be sitting all alone and comfortable.

In mid-March, despite of disturbing news concerts and parties continued, with some weddings and especially one bar mitzvah in New York City attended by a huge number of guests. During this time authorities had already started to slowly close things down. The most hurtful thing happened right before quarantine started, just two days before. We had a spot bought to perform at a booking conference in chocolate capital of the world HERSHEY, Pennsylvania. We paid almost $4,000 to be able to dance there for the students of Penn State campuses. I really hoped the event would be canceled or rescheduled for next year, but the organizers didn't do anything like that. They held a conference with a half-empty hall. At the last minute, many universities wouldn't let their students or representatives go to this event. We lost a lot of money, because we were not able to sell any concerts. Two of our dancers got infected and then got sick for weeks. Leonid Bruk didn't bother to show up.

Our last pre quarantine concert was on March 15th in Brooklyn at a Russian restaurant in the Bay Ridge area. Guests were hugging, kissing, drinking vodka and dancing. A famous journalist from a Russian channel RTVI, who was one of the guests, loved our performance so much that he invited us to his show. When we went to shoot the show next week, all of New York was already completely empty. There were no people in Times Square, Manhattan at all, one cop got out of his car with the colorful lights on and while coughing ordered us to go back to New Jersey. I called Leonid but he was busy listening to President's press conference at the White House.

On the way home I remembered how my parents told me about the military conflict on the Soviet-Chinese border (Damansky Island) in 1969. Back then everyone thought that the USSR would have a war with China. My grandmother Anna Nikolaevna Smirnova, who at that time worked as a stableman in a village near Vyshny Volochok, got the horse ready and went to a shop to buy a bag of sugar, bag of salt and a bag of pasta. I decided that we should do the same, just in case. We went to the store and bought a whole carload of canned food, toilet paper and other necessities. It's all still in the garage because nobody likes canned food.

On March 16, the phone went silent and emails with cancellations of all concerts started to come. As a result, we lost all scheduled work until September. No new gigs were coming, only requests to return deposits for scheduled concerts. On March 22 we filled unemployment benefits forms online and are still waiting for a decision. I started looking for a job as hard as I could and as a result I got a temporary job as a night stocker at a Costco store next door, and found out that a small church in our town gives people free food on Saturdays. Our first virtual concert for 26 schools in Texas took place on April 14. As it turned out, performing virtually is much harder than doing it the usual way. In the fight against electronic communications, a person doesn't always come out the winner. It took almost three days to film the dancers and to videotape the performance. However, more than a thousand schoolchildren and teachers watched our show online on the Internet and even sent their thank-you notes. In June and July, we have a few more virtual concerts scheduled in the libraries of New York State and Pennsylvania.

In the beginning of June 2020 our contrabass balalaika player Leonid Bruk just quit his smoking and coughing. Patient Zero was finally cured.
