As opposed to other European countries, Russia chose a different method of communication with the Roma people. As much as the Theatre Romen served one state ideology, it also served the Roma people. The Theatre has become one of the most prominent institutions of Roma culture and today houses the third generation of Roma artists. The fifty-year anniversary of the Theatre was celebrated in 1981. The most important tour "Romen" had was by far the one made in 1982 when the Theatre went to Japan, their first trip abroad. Aleksander Kolpakov, the group's director, was born in 1943 in the district of Orienburg in Eastern Russia. He was raised with music among the Servo group of Roma and began playing the seven-string guitar as a boy. In the 1960s he moved to Moscow and has since worked with a number of groups, including the Romen Theatre. He is a composer as well as a singer and instrumentalist.

The Russian 7-string guitar was popular in Russia since the mid-1790s. A seven-string acoustic guitar tuned to the Open G major key tuning is known in Russia as the semistrunnaya gitara or "semistrunka". "Russian guitar duo Kolpakov and Timofeyev" are one of the best performers currently playing this rare instrument.
