Students gathered on March 21st, 2018 in Kochoff Hall on The University of Michigan-Dearborn campus for the annual Global Fest celebrating cultural and ethnic diversity. The student-led cultural showcase featured art displays, a fashion show, live performances and food booths from members of the U of M-Dearborn community.
Dancers, musicians and singers of Barynya ensemble presented a program of traditional Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Gypsy, Jewish dances, songs and music on Wednesday, March 21st, 2018 during "Global Fest at University of Michigan-Dearborn celebrates diversity" event at the Kochoff Hall of the University Center, 4901 Evergreen Road, University Center, Dearborn, Michigan, 48128. Cast of Barynya: Mikhail Smirnov (singer, garmoshka, and guitar player), Alisa Egorova (dancer), Elina Karokhina (balalaika virtuoso), Serhiy Tsyganok (dancer). The program of ensemble Barynya performance included Russian Gypsy folk dance "Mardzhandzha", Ukrainian National dance "Hopak", Jewish Bottle Dance, Russian folk button accordion garmoshka introduction with popular folk song "Moroz" (Ой, мороз-мороз), Russian folk song and dance "The Snowstorm" (Russian: Метелица - Metelitsa), introduction of Russian folk instrument balalaika with performance of Russian folk dance "Kamarinskaiya" (Камаринская), Russian Gypsy Roma song and dance "Dark Eyes" (Очи Чёрные), "Skorogovorkee" - Medley of Russian tongue-twisters (Скороговорки), "Evreiskiy Tanets" - Russian Jewish wedding dance with Candle (Еврейский танец со свечкой), Ukrainian folk song and dance "You Tricked Me" (Пидманула), Instrumental Balalaika Medley of two Russian folk songs "Muzh" and "Valenkee" ("Как заставил меня муж", "Валенки"), Popular Russian folk song "Kaleenka" (Калинка-малинка моя), and other selections.
Seven dancers and musicians of ensemble Barynya provided one hour concert that included Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Tatar, Russian Gypsy Roma, Moldavian, Jewish Bottle Dancers, live performances on Balalaika and Garmoshka during International Society's 100 Year Anniversary Party in Howell, Michigan. Ensemble Barynya cast included Alisa Egorova (dancer), Serhiy Tsyganok (dancer), Konstantin Tulinov (dancer), Maxim Alladin Al-Names (dancer), balalaika virtuoso Elina Karokhina, and Russian ethnomusicologist, folk singer, garmoshka (Russian folk button accordion) player Mikhail Smirnov who led the performance by giving a short explanation of every number of the program in English. Mikhail talked briefly about costumes, instruments, traditions, and performed several Russian tongue-twisters.
